Driver Number Required

New Car Insurance Legislation comes into effect 31st March

What you need to know

The Department of Transport announced new Car Insurance Legislation that’s effective from 31st March 2025, which aims to enhance road safety in Ireland, by tackling and eliminating the issue of uninsured drivers behind the wheel.

The new legislation mandates that insurers, and intermediaries acting on behalf of insurers must collect Driver Number data from motorists validate it against the National Vehicle & Driver File of the Department of Transport before they can issue a car insurance policy.

Changes ahead!

From 31st March 2025, drivers will not be able to take out or renew their car insurance policy without providing their Driver Number.

Where can I find my Driver Number?

On an Irish Driving Licence, the Driver Number is a  9-digit number. Here's were you can find it.

• Paper driving licence: Field 5

• Plastic card driving licence: Field 4b

What does this mean for Car Insurance holders?

The new legislation states that when taking out or renewing car insurance policies, all motorists must provide their Driver Number, along with that of any named drivers on their policy.

If your licence is from outside of Ireland, we require both your Driver Number and a copy of the licence (front and back) to validate it.
